Scotland Announces Squad for ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 as Late Entrant
Scotland has officially unveiled its 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, set to commence on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. This announcement marks a significant moment for the European side, which has swiftly transitioned from a late addition to the tournament to a fully prepared contender on the global stage.
From Replacement to Ready: Scotland's Journey to the World Cup
The International Cricket Council (ICC) drafted Scotland into the tournament following the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) decision to withdraw its team from India, citing security concerns. As the highest-ranked team outside the original qualification list, Scotland was confirmed as Bangladesh's replacement, stepping into the spotlight with determination and focus.
This opportunity allows Scotland to feature in its seventh Men's T20 World Cup, having previously participated in six of the nine editions: 2007, 2009, 2016, 2021, 2022, and 2024. Under the leadership of captain Richie Berrington, the squad aims to make a strong impact in the sub-continent conditions.
Balanced Squad with Depth and Promise
Cricket Scotland's Head of Performance, Steve Snell, expressed confidence in the selected squad, emphasizing its balance and adaptability. "The coaching staff, selectors, and I are all really excited about the squad that has been picked. We feel it's well-balanced and caters for a lot of different scenarios and challenges that the team will face in India," Snell stated, as quoted by the ICC.
In addition to the main 15 players, Cricket Scotland has named two travelling reserves and three non-travelling reserves, ensuring depth and flexibility throughout the tournament.
Key Players to Watch in the Tournament
Snell highlighted young fast bowler Zainullah Ihsan as a standout talent, noting his impressive performances at youth and 'A' squad levels. "There's obviously a great opportunity for Zainullah Ihsan, and whenever he's played at youth level or for the 'A' squad, he's shown an exciting range of skills and bowled at genuine pace," he said.
He also praised Oli Davidson for his strong work ethic and well-deserved call-up, underscoring the blend of experience and emerging talent within the squad.
Group C Fixtures and Tournament Opener
Placed in Group C, Scotland will face formidable opponents including England, Italy, Nepal, and the West Indies. Their tournament opener is scheduled against the West Indies at Eden Gardens on February 7, setting the stage for an exciting campaign.
