Shreyas Iyer Criticizes Powerplay Approach After India's Heavy Loss
India's stand-in captain Shreyas Iyer attributed the team's crushing 10-wicket defeat to England in the second T20I at Manchester to a lack of intent during the powerplay overs. Chasing a modest target of 122, England openers Jason Roy and Jos Buttler raced to victory in just 10.3 overs, remaining unbeaten with 62 and 55 respectively.
India, after being put in to bat, managed only 121 for 9 in their 20 overs. The top order struggled, with openers Rishabh Pant (4) and Sanju Samson (5) falling early. Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 38 off 41 balls, but the innings lacked momentum.
Powerplay Failure Sealed India's Fate
Iyer expressed disappointment with the batting performance, especially in the first six overs. India scored just 37 for 2 in the powerplay, failing to capitalize on the field restrictions. "We didn't show enough intent in the powerplay. We lost early wickets and couldn't recover. The pitch was good for batting, but we didn't execute our plans," Iyer said in the post-match presentation.
England's bowlers, led by Chris Jordan (3/18) and Adil Rashid (2/16), kept India in check. The lack of partnerships and inability to rotate strike regularly resulted in a below-par total.
England's Dominant Chase
England's reply was clinical. Jason Roy smashed 62 off 37 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes, while Jos Buttler remained unbeaten on 55 off 36 balls, hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes. The pair added 122 runs for the first wicket, the highest partnership for England in T20Is against India.
India's bowlers had no answers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar went for 36 runs in his 3 overs, and Harshal Patel conceded 30 in 3 overs. No Indian bowler picked up a wicket as England romped home with 57 balls to spare.
Series Leveled at 1-1
The win leveled the three-match series 1-1 after India won the first T20I by 50 runs. Iyer acknowledged the need for improvement before the series decider. "We need to go back and analyze our batting approach. We have to be more positive and take calculated risks. The bowlers also need to find ways to pick wickets," he added.
The third and final T20I will be played at the same venue on July 7. India will look to bounce back and win the series, while England will aim to capitalize on their momentum.
