South Africa Hails Bafana Bafana for Historic World Cup Knockout Berth

Historic Achievement for Bafana Bafana

South Africa's national football team, Bafana Bafana, made history on Wednesday by advancing to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 for the first time. A 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A match at Guadalupe, Mexico, secured their place in the Round of 32. The South African government hailed the achievement as a defining moment for the nation's football.

Government Celebrates on Social Media

Following the milestone, the South African government posted on X (formerly Twitter): "HISTORY MADE! BAFANA BAFANA ARE THROUGH TO THE FIFA WORLD CUP ROUND OF 32! A memorable night for South African football as Bafana Bafana secure a place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. The team has shown courage, determination and belief, making the nation proud on the world stage. South Africa stands united in celebration. Congratulations, Bafana Bafana -- the journey continues!" The post reflected nationwide pride and unity.

Match Decided by Maseko's Strike

The decisive goal came in the second half from winger Thapelo Maseko, who became the second youngest goalscorer for South Africa in World Cup history at 22 years and 225 days. Substitute Teshpang Moremi set up the goal by collecting possession on the left flank, beating his marker, and delivering a low pass across the edge of the penalty area. Maseko controlled the ball, shifted it onto his left foot, and fired a precise finish into the near corner, putting South Africa ahead.

First Half Action

South Africa started brightly despite playing before a crowd largely supporting South Korea. Maseko looked threatening early on, nearly creating an opening on a counterattack before being stopped by defender Lee Gihyuk. The African side continued to create better chances in the opening half, with Korea Republic goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu making several saves. He produced a strong stop to deny Thalente Mbatha's long-range effort and kept out Evidence Makgopa from close range.

South Korea's Response

Seeking a breakthrough after the interval, South Korea head coach Hong Myungbo made three substitutions, including the introduction of captain Son Heung-min, to swing the contest. However, as South Korea pushed forward, South Africa struck against the run of play. Korea pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages but failed to break through South Africa's defence, as Bafana Bafana held on for a famous victory.

Group Standings

The result saw South Africa finish second in Group A with four points from three matches, recording one win, one draw, and one defeat. Mexico topped the group with a perfect nine points from three wins, scoring six goals without conceding any. South Korea finished third with three points, and Czechia were eliminated after collecting just one point from a draw and two defeats.

Next Match

South Africa will now travel to Los Angeles, where they are set to face the runners-up of Group B in the Round of 32 on June 28. The team's journey continues as they aim to build on their historic achievement.
