Stefon Diggs spent years anchoring one of the NFL's most dangerous passing attacks in Buffalo. But a return to Orchard Park is looking increasingly unlikely. With training camp just weeks away and no contract in place, Diggs has shifted his focus, openly floating the idea of signing with the Washington Commanders, the franchise closest to where he grew up.
Is Stefon Diggs joining the Washington Commanders?
Stefon Diggs did not mince words when speaking to FOX 5 in Washington. "I did have a small piece of me like, damn, it would be great to come home and play and play in front of the fans I used to play in front of as a young adolescent in college and just kind of doing something for the city," he said. "That definitely would be a moment."
When asked directly whether he had considered suiting up for his hometown team, the answer was immediate. "100 percent," Diggs said. "That's one of the first things I thought about like, damn, if I wanted to come back and play for my hometown team. I just had that same kind of energy when I chose to go to the University of Maryland. So I was just like, damn, it would be a thing. It would definitely be a thing if that kind of worked out. So we'll see, we'll see. We're not ruling it out."
Washington's receiver room has been unsettled all offseason. The Commanders were linked to Brandon Aiyuk, but the San Francisco 49ers have shown no urgency to move him. That opens a door for Stefon Diggs, who at 31 still has plenty left in the tank. Last season with the New England Patriots, he posted 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. Pair that production with a developing Jayden Daniels, and the fit starts making some sense.
Why aren't the Bills bringing back Stefon Diggs?
Despite the mutual flirtation that played out in the press earlier this offseason, head coach Joe Brady made clear that Buffalo is moving in a different direction. He acknowledged Diggs' quality but was firm about his confidence in the current group.
"I love the way that (Diggs) plays and respect (him)," Brady said. "But I have so much confidence in this room right now. I loved where these guys were at (during the offseason program)."
Brady pointed to the additions of D.J. Moore and Skyler Bell, alongside returning pieces like Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and Joshua Palmer. For him, the receiver room checks out without Diggs. It is not a rebuke so much as a vote of confidence in what they already have.
The Bills open training camp in late July, with public sessions starting Wednesday, 29 July at 8:30 a.m. Preseason kicks off 15 August against the Carolina Panthers.
