Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 to enter World Cup Round of 16

Switzerland advanced to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a dominant 2-0 win over Algeria in Vancouver on Thursday. Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Dan Ndoye doubled the lead just after halftime, securing the Swiss team's first World Cup knockout victory since 1938.

Embolo strikes early

Breel Embolo was named Player of the Match after a clinical finish in the 10th minute. The goal originated from a dazzling solo run by Johan Manzambi down the left flank, who reached the byline and delivered a precise cross for Embolo to convert from close range. Switzerland carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Ndoye doubles the advantage

Immediately after the restart, in the 46th minute, Dan Ndoye scored Switzerland's second goal. A defensive clearance fell to him outside the box, and he fired a low shot into the net. Algeria, captained by Riyad Mahrez, attempted to respond but could not breach the disciplined Swiss defense. Switzerland nearly added a third late on, but Fabian Rieder missed a clear chance.
