Raipur: Three people, including an 11-year-old girl and a married couple, died in separate weather-related incidents in Chhattisgarh within 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for thunderstorms and lightning across several parts of the state over the next two days.
Incident in Sakti District
In Sakti district, Class VI student Deepti Chandra, 11, of Anda village died on Friday evening after being struck by lightning while playing outside her home.
Incident in Bilaspur District
In Bilaspur’s Masturi area, Rajni Chandrakar, 32, and her husband Sachin Chandrakar, 45, were electrocuted on Saturday. Police said Rajni came in contact with an electrified GI clothesline in the courtyard of their Karra village house and collapsed. Sachin was electrocuted while trying to save her. Both were declared dead at the Masturi community health centre.
Preliminary investigation suggests a power cable snapped during recent thunderstorms and touched the GI wire, causing electricity to pass through it. Police have registered a case and started an inquiry.
Previous Incident in Raigarh
Earlier this week, heavy rain and strong winds in Raigarh district led to a wall collapse that killed one woman and injured two others.
Weather Forecast
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places across Chhattisgarh on Sunday and Monday.
