PUNE: Three young men drowned in the backwaters of a dam while attempting to click a selfie on Friday in Maval tehsil of Pune district. The tragic incident occurred around 3 pm at Jadhavwadi dam near Navalakh Umbre village.
The victims, all residents of Bhosari, were identified as Ajay Garude, Santosh Edke, and Aniket Pawar. According to police, a group of six had visited the spot for a picnic. During their outing, four of them entered the shallow water area and attempted to take a selfie.
One of the remaining friends, who was standing at a distance, rushed to help and managed to rescue one person from the water. “As per information received from their friends, four group members were trying to click a selfie while standing in knee-deep water. One of them, who was standing at the edge, slipped and fell into deeper water. As all four had their arms around each other's necks, they fell in one after another and started drowning,” said an officer from the Talegaon MIDC police station.
Rescue teams, including members of Vanyajeev Rakshak Maval Sanstha, Shivdurg Rescue Group, personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, and local police, carried out a search operation. The bodies of the three victims were later recovered from the dam.
Details of the Incident
The group of six friends had come to the dam for a picnic. The four who entered the water were attempting to take a selfie with their arms around each other. When one slipped, the chain reaction caused all four to fall into deeper water. The friend who tried to help could only save one person, while the others drowned.
Rescue Operation
Multiple agencies participated in the rescue operation. The search lasted for several hours before the bodies were found. The police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating further.
This incident highlights the dangers of taking selfies in risky locations. Authorities have repeatedly warned against such behavior, especially near water bodies. The families of the deceased have been informed.
