Robin Uthappa Criticises Annual ICC Events, Says 'Novelty is Wearing Off'
Uthappa: ICC shouldn't host tournaments every year

As the cricketing world gears up for the men's T20 World Cup next month, former Indian batsman Robin Uthappa has shifted the focus from off-field controversies back to the game's structure. Speaking from Durban during his commentary duties for the SA20 league, Uthappa raised a critical concern about the International Cricket Council's (ICC) crowded calendar.

Uthappa's Plea to ICC: Rethink the Annual Tournament Model

Robin Uthappa has openly questioned the wisdom of hosting a major ICC event every single year. He argued that this relentless schedule is diluting the special appeal and significance of these global tournaments for both players and fans. The former World Cup winner pointed to the consecutive lineup of the ODI World Cup in 2023, the T20 World Cup in 2024, the Champions Trophy in 2025, and another T20 World Cup starting February 7.

"I think the game needs to evolve from the administrative perspective," Uthappa stated. "How much value do fans and audiences hold for an ICC tournament every year? The novelty of it is wearing off, to be very honest and with all due respect." He emphasised that the unique charm of an ICC championship is integral and must be preserved by ensuring adequate gaps between events.

Durban Visit Revives 2007 T20 World Cup Memories

Uthappa's current assignment in Durban for the SA20's fourth edition brought back a flood of memories from a historic moment in Indian cricket. He was a key participant in the famous bowl-out against Pakistan during the 2007 T20 World Cup group stage match at the same venue. India famously won that tie-breaker, with Uthappa successfully hitting the stumps.

"Durban brings back a lot of memories. I go back to 2007 all the time," he reminisced. "Every time I come here, I look at that dressing room on the other side and I just think of all the wonderful things that we created here." He revealed that the Indian team had secretly practiced for a bowl-out scenario, which gave them an edge over their rivals that night. "We did a lot of preparation for it, which we don't really kind of talk about, but I think we were better prepared than the opposition team," Uthappa recalled.

The Need for Strategic Evolution in Cricket Administration

Uthappa's comments come at a time when the cricketing calendar is more packed than ever, with franchise leagues and international commitments vying for space. His critique is a direct call to action for the game's global administrators. He believes that for the long-term health and appeal of international cricket, the ICC must strategically space out its premier events to maintain their prestige and viewer interest.

"I think the novelty of the ICC Championships must be there... It has to mean something. There has to be a little bit of a gap. We can't have or shouldn't have an ICC championship every year," he asserted. Uthappa concluded that this is a hard truth the administrators must face as they work on evolving the sport's future roadmap.
