Vadodara's ODI Stadium Becomes Election Flashpoint Amid Cost, Quality Allegations
The Kotambi International Cricket Stadium in Vadodara recently celebrated a significant milestone by hosting a one-day international (ODI) match after a gap of 16 years. The event drew widespread praise from cricketers and BCCI administrators for the venue's modern facilities and infrastructure. However, this achievement has now been overshadowed by a brewing political storm within the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA), where the stadium has emerged as a central flashpoint in the ongoing elections.
Allegations of Mismanagement and Overspending
The Royal Satyamev Jayate Group (RSJG), a faction contesting the BCA elections, has launched serious accusations against the rival Revival Group, led by Pranav Amin. RSJG candidates allege that the stadium's construction was marred by severe mismanagement and exorbitant overspending. According to their claims, the Kotambi stadium could have been built for approximately Rs 100 crore, but the Revival Group reportedly spent over Rs 360 crore on the project.
Jatin Vakil, who is running for the joint secretary's position on the RSJG panel, emphasized the need for transparency. "We have demanded full transparency, including details of the tender process and the audit report of the stadium," Vakil stated. The group has called for a thorough investigation into the financial dealings and procurement procedures associated with the stadium's development.
Concerns Over Infrastructure and Delays
Beyond financial irregularities, the RSJG has raised additional concerns regarding the stadium's infrastructure. They point to the lack of a proper approach road to the venue, which could impact accessibility for fans and players alike. Vakil also questioned the prolonged timeline of the project. "Why did it take them eight long years to build the stadium? We understand that such projects can face delays, but the BCA management took an unusually long time," he added, suggesting inefficiencies in the execution and oversight of the construction process.
Defense from the Revival Group
In response, the Revival Group has firmly rejected all allegations, maintaining that the Kotambi stadium is among the finest cricket venues in the world. Pranav Amin and BCA presidential candidate Kiran More defended the project, asserting that it was executed without any mismanagement and within appropriate financial boundaries.
Kiran More highlighted the stadium's successful hosting of the ODI as a testament to its quality. "The stadium successfully hosted an ODI and was appreciated by players as well as BCCI officials. It is a matter of pride for Vadodara, but opponents are raising such issues to malign our image," More said, accusing the RSJG of politicizing the achievement for electoral gains.
Counter-Allegations and Political Tensions
The Revival Group has also fired back with its own allegations, claiming that some RSJG members attempted to sabotage Vadodara's chances of hosting an ODI by spreading misinformation about the stadium's safety. During a recent gathering of Revival Group supporters, Pranav Amin criticized these efforts, describing them as malicious attempts to undermine the city's cricketing reputation.
As the BCA elections approach, the controversy surrounding the Kotambi stadium has intensified, with both factions leveraging the issue to rally support.
