Rajasthan United in Crisis as AIFF Enforces Floodlight Mandate for IFL Matches
In a significant development that has thrown the ongoing Indian Football League (IFL) season into further disarray, Rajasthan United FC is set to engage with government officials to secure an alternate home venue. This urgent move comes in response to a directive from the All India Football Federation (AIFF), mandating that all IFL matches be conducted under fully operational floodlights starting April 19, 2024.
AIFF's Strict Directive and Financial Penalties
The AIFF has issued a clear and non-negotiable requirement for clubs to ensure their home grounds are equipped with floodlights for evening fixtures. In a letter addressed to all IFL clubs, the federation emphasized the necessity of this measure to uphold the league's broadcast commitments and commercial standing. Specifically, all matches from April 19 onward will kick off at 6:30 PM IST, post-sunset, making floodlights essential.
Failure to comply with this directive carries severe financial consequences. Clubs that are unable to host games with fully operational floodlights will face a penalty of Rs 9 lakh for each missed match. The AIFF stated, "We must be transparent if any club that fails to comply with the 6:30 PM kick-off requirement, or plays a match at a venue without fully operational floodlights, will be liable to a financial penalty of INR 9,00,000/- (Rupees Nine Lakhs Only) per instance."
Rajasthan United's Venue Dilemma and Government Outreach
Rajasthan United, currently positioned second in the IFL standings with 14 points from seven matches, finds itself in a precarious situation. Their home ground, the Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium in Jaipur, which was constructed by the Rajasthan State Sports Council and Jaipur Development Authority, lacks the necessary floodlight infrastructure. This deficiency puts the club at risk of incurring substantial fines and disrupting their successful home record.
A club official revealed that Rajasthan United plans to meet with government authorities to explore potential solutions. This is not the first time the club has approached the state government regarding venue issues, highlighting ongoing challenges in infrastructure development. If government intervention proves unsuccessful, the club is considering alternative strategies, including:
- Negotiating with the AIFF to schedule their home games at 5 PM instead of the mandated 6:30 PM.
- Relocating home matches to the grounds of other clubs, such as Namdhari FC or Dempo SC.

The AIFF's directive arrives more than halfway through the IFL season, with all teams having completed seven matches each. This timing adds pressure on clubs like Rajasthan United, who have demonstrated strong performance at home.
