Shimla: Himachal Pradesh recorded a notable increase in fish production from its major reservoirs in 2025-26, benefiting over 6,000 fishermen across the state.

Production Growth

Fish production increased from 549 metric tonnes in 2022-23 to 818 metric tonnes in 2025-26, marking a rise of over 268 metric tonnes. Pong Dam reservoir emerged as the top contributor, followed by Ranjit Sagar and other reservoirs, according to the state fisheries department.

Key Reservoirs

Fishing activities are currently underway in five key reservoirs – Gobind Sagar, Pong Dam, Chamera, Kol Dam and Ranjit Sagar – spanning around 43,785 hectares. These water bodies not only support livelihoods but also ensure a steady supply of protein-rich food.

Socio-Economic Impact

The growth is expected to significantly improve the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities in Bilaspur, Una, Kangra, Chamba and nearby regions, reinforcing reservoir fisheries as a vital source of income and employment, the department added.

This development highlights the state's commitment to sustainable fisheries management and the welfare of its fishing communities. The increase in production is attributed to better management practices, stocking of fingerlings, and enhanced monitoring of water bodies.

With over 6,000 fishermen directly benefiting, the sector is poised for further growth, contributing to food security and rural livelihoods in the region.
