Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowling coach Tim Southee has confirmed that Sri Lankan pace sensation Matheesha Pathirana has arrived at the team's camp and is bowling well in training. The development comes as a major boost for the franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
Pathirana's Arrival Confirmed
Speaking to the media, Southee stated, “He’s arrived and bowling well at training. It’s great to have him here. He brings a unique skill set with his slingy action and yorkers.” Pathirana, known for his deadly yorkers and ability to bowl in the death overs, was acquired by KKR in the IPL 2025 mega auction for a significant sum.
Injury Concerns Addressed
There were earlier concerns about Pathirana’s fitness after he missed Sri Lanka’s recent bilateral series due to a hamstring issue. However, Southee clarified that the pacer has recovered fully and is bowling at full intensity. “He’s been working closely with the medical team and has passed all fitness tests. He’s ready to go,” Southee added.
Pathirana’s inclusion strengthens KKR’s bowling attack, which already features the likes of Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, and Varun Chakravarthy. The Sri Lankan’s ability to bowl yorkers at will makes him a potent weapon in the death overs.
KKR's Preparations for IPL 2025
KKR are currently in the middle of their pre-season camp, with players undergoing rigorous training sessions. The team is looking to build on their performance from the previous season, where they reached the playoffs. With Pathirana now in the mix, the bowling unit looks more formidable.
Southee also praised the team’s overall preparation, saying, “The boys are working hard. We have a good blend of experience and youth. Pathirana’s arrival adds depth to our bowling options.”
KKR will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
