Egypt coach Hossam Hassan gets tenure extension after World Cup

The Egypt Football Association (EFA) has extended the contract of national team head coach Hossam Hassan following a commendable performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision was announced on Wednesday, July 9, 2026, after Egypt reached the round of 16 for the first time since 2018.

Contract extension details

EFA President Hany Abo Rida confirmed that the board approved renewals for both Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan. According to local media, the new contract runs until 2030. Hassan, 59, had been coaching without a national contract since February 2026, as he admitted earlier.

World Cup performance

Under Hassan, Egypt secured their first World Cup victory with a 3-1 win over New Zealand in Group G. In the round of 32, they defeated Australia on penalties, marking the nation's first-ever knockout match win in the tournament. The Mohamed Salah-led side then faced defending champions Argentina in the pre-quarterfinals, taking a 2-0 lead before Argentina staged a three-goal comeback in 13 minutes to win 3-2.

AFCON success

Hassan was appointed in February 2024 and led Egypt to the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This was his first major accomplishment with the team.

Future prospects

The extension ensures continuity for the national team as they build on their recent progress. Egypt's World Cup campaign was their fourth overall and first since 2018, and the round of 16 finish represents their best result since 1934.
