Fuente Lauds Yamal's Positive Attitude
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has praised teenage sensation Lamine Yamal for his infectious optimism, calling the Barcelona star a player who "transmits optimism, confidence and security." Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Spain's FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 clash against Austria, Fuente highlighted Yamal's belief in the team's potential.
Spain finished the group stage without conceding a goal for the first time in their World Cup history. They began with a surprising goalless draw against Cabo Verde, but bounced back with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 victory over Uruguay to secure their place in the knockout stage. Yamal has scored one goal in three appearances so far.
Yamal's Recovery and Role
Yamal, who recovered from a pre-tournament injury, played only 19 minutes against Cabo Verde, 45 minutes against Saudi Arabia (scoring an early goal), and 76 minutes against Uruguay. When asked if the 18-year-old could play a full 90 minutes, Fuente responded, "Lamine can now play whatever we ask of him. We have been, as always, very careful with all the players' recovery." He added that match intensity dictates playing time: "It is not the same playing a very demanding game, very intense and fast, where you might only be able to play half an hour, and other games that are more comfortable and you can play 70 minutes. Lamine is really good. You have seen how excited he is to play."
In a radio interview earlier this week, Yamal expressed confidence in Spain's ability, stating, "Once we hit our stride ... we'll be almost unstoppable," and claiming Spain is "the only national team expected to play really well." Fuente endorsed Yamal's remarks: "I think he is an optimistic player, confident about his possibilities and those of his teammate. We know what our potential is. We know how far we can go. Yamal's words, in their context, seem very positive to me. He transmits optimism, confidence, security, and I love that."
Fitness Updates on Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino
Fuente also provided encouraging updates on wingers Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino, who both sustained injuries in the match against Uruguay. "Yeremy's recovery has been miraculous," Fuente said. "After the game, it looked like a [collarbone] fracture, and it was not. With his character and his courage, he is back training completely normally." Nico Williams is also making progress, though Fuente did not specify if either would start against Austria. Victor Munoz, who has yet to appear in the tournament, remains unavailable.
Spain will face Austria on Friday at 12:30 am IST in Inglewood, California, as they seek their second World Cup title. The team has yet to concede a goal in the tournament, a feat they achieved for the first time in their World Cup history.
