Arthur Fery Stuns Carlos Alcaraz to Reach Wimbledon Semifinals
Arthur Fery, a 22-year-old British tennis player, has made history at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships by becoming the first men's wild card entrant in 25 years to reach the semifinals. Fery defeated world No. 3 and three-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in a thrilling quarterfinal match on Centre Court.
The last men's wild card to reach the Wimbledon semifinals was Goran Ivanisevic in 2001, who went on to win the title. Fery, currently ranked No. 123 in the world, has now become the lowest-ranked male player to reach the semifinals at the All England Club since 2002.
A Historic Run for the British Star
Fery's journey to the semifinals has been nothing short of remarkable. He entered the tournament as a wild card after impressing in the grass-court season, reaching the quarterfinals at Queen's Club. In the earlier rounds, he defeated qualifier Maximilian Marterer in five sets, followed by straight-sets wins over No. 26 seed Sebastian Korda and No. 15 seed Hubert Hurkacz.
His quarterfinal victory over Alcaraz, who was considered the favorite to win the title, was a masterclass in composure and power. Fery fired 18 aces and saved 9 of 11 break points, showcasing his serve and mental strength under pressure.
"I can't believe it. This is a dream come true," Fery said after the match. "I've been working so hard for this moment, and to beat someone like Carlos on Centre Court is incredible. I just tried to stay focused and believe in my game."
Alcaraz Praises Fery's Performance
Alcaraz, who had won 12 consecutive matches at Wimbledon, acknowledged Fery's superior play. "He played unbelievable tennis today," Alcaraz said in his press conference. "His serve was huge, and he didn't give me many opportunities. I'm disappointed, but I have to congratulate him. He deserves to be in the semifinals."
The loss ends Alcaraz's bid for a third Wimbledon title and marks the first time he has failed to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam since the 2023 US Open.
What's Next for Fery?
Fery will face No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, a daunting challenge for the young Briton. Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, advanced after a straight-sets victory over Jannik Sinner.
Regardless of the outcome, Fery has already secured his place in tennis history. His run has also boosted his ranking, ensuring he will break into the top 100 for the first time next week.
"I'm just going to enjoy the moment and prepare for the next match," Fery said. "Playing Novak at Wimbledon is a dream, and I'll give it my all."
The semifinal is scheduled for Friday, with Fery hoping to become the first wild card to reach a Wimbledon final since Goran Ivanisevic in 2001.
