Ireland's Historic Win Over India Sparks Excitement
Following Ireland's historic victory over India in the first T20I at Belfast on Friday, Cricket Ireland chairperson Brian MacNeice spoke to ANI about the growing potential of cricket in Europe. He highlighted the upcoming European T20 Premier League (ETPL) as a major driver for the sport's expansion across the continent.
ETPL Hype Grows After Ireland's Win
MacNeice noted that the hype around ETPL is building rapidly. "It is really growing," he said, describing interactions with fans after the match. "They were all really excited about the prospect of the European T20 Premier League coming." He emphasized strong support from players, coaches, and owners, calling the league's founders and three-member boards from Ireland, the Netherlands, and Scotland "fantastic."
Europe's First ICC-Sanctioned T20 League
The ETPL, Europe's first ICC-sanctioned T20 league, will run from August 26 to September 20, 2026, featuring 33 matches across six city-based franchises: Glasgow, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, and Rotterdam. MacNeice said the league will allow players from these nations to compete against top international stars, including Australian players Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, and South African veterans Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen.
ETPL as a Game-Changer for European Cricket
MacNeice expressed strong optimism about cricket's growth in Europe, calling the ETPL a "game-changer." He stated, "The growth potential for cricket in Europe is enormous. Not just in Ireland, in Scotland and in the Netherlands. You saw what Italy did in the last T20 World Cup. I have no doubt that over the next decade plus, cricket in Europe is going to grow. The ETPL is going to be a fundamental part of that and one of the accelerators."
Platform to Showcase European Talent
He pointed to recent performances by Scotland, Ireland, and the Netherlands in the T20 World Cup as evidence of high-quality players in Europe. "Outside of Asia, Europe is the largest in terms of the number of member countries in world cricket. It indexes second to Asia in terms of fan followership. We want to use the ETPL as a platform to showcase cricket in Europe and to really drive that growth," MacNeice said. He believes the league will increase participation by inspiring fans with top-class European cricket.
Discussions on a European Cup
Regarding a possible European Cup featuring England and other European teams, MacNeice confirmed ongoing discussions with member boards. "My primary focus right now is the final preparation for season one of the European T20 Premier League. I am working very closely with the other member boards in relation to the idea of a European Cup competition as well. Those discussions are going very well, and I would be very optimistic that we will see something coming on," he said. He added that the ETPL will demonstrate what is possible and that a European Cup would further grow the game across Europe.
Commitment to Growing Cricket in Europe
MacNeice concluded, "For me, the biggest growth potential in global cricket right now is across Europe, and I'm absolutely determined, along with all of our partners in ETPL and in the member boards, to continue to work really hard to develop and grow the game right across Europe."
