FIFA WC 2026: Tuchel feels altitude effects before Mexico clash

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged the challenges posed by high altitude ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 clash against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Speaking to Sky Sports, Tuchel admitted to experiencing a slight headache and disrupted sleep due to the altitude, which stands at approximately 7,220 feet (2,240 metres) above sea level. He warned that the first 15 to 20 minutes of the match against an aggressive Mexican side on their home turf would be the most difficult.

Tuchel's personal experience with altitude

Tuchel revealed that he felt the effects of altitude upon arriving in Mexico City. "I felt, for example, a slight headache in the hotel room through the day, I did not sleep as well as the days before but nothing that you cannot handle and you cannot adapt," he said. He noted that the players felt the impact during the first minutes of training but adapted as the session progressed. "It is just what it is. We cannot physically adapt. It is just impossible. But we are here one day before to experience it at least, to not have all the first-time experience in the warm-up [for the match]. So we will have the warm-up, especially with [focus on] the flight of the ball, with a bit of shortness of breath," he added.

Mexico's formidable home record at Estadio Azteca

England faces a daunting task against Mexico, who boast an exceptional record at the Estadio Azteca. Since first playing at the venue in 1966, Mexico have lost only twice in competitive matches there. In 89 matches at the Azteca, they have recorded 70 wins and 17 draws, underscoring the venue's reputation as one of football's toughest away grounds. This record adds to the pressure on England, led by captain Harry Kane, as they prepare to face the hosts in front of a passionate home crowd.

Altitude and ball behaviour

The high altitude at the Azteca affects players' oxygen levels and alters the ball's flight. The thinner air allows the ball to travel faster and farther compared to lower-altitude venues such as Atlanta Stadium, which is about 312 metres above sea level. England previously played at Atlanta Stadium in their round of 32 match against DR Congo, where conditions were less challenging. The altitude difference requires England to adjust their passing and shooting tactics.

Tuchel's tactical assessment

Tuchel acknowledged that Mexico typically start matches on home soil with high intensity and aggression. "I think it is not a coincidence that Mexico start their matches normally on home turf very, very strong, very front-footed, very aggressively because I think the first 15-20 minutes will be maybe the toughest for us. Once we overcome that I think we are in a good place," he said. The match is scheduled for July 6 at 5:30 AM IST.

England's path ahead

England advanced to the round of 16 after topping their group, but the knockout stage presents a stern test. The combination of altitude, Mexico's home record, and the hostile atmosphere at the Azteca will test England's resilience. Tuchel's squad will need to adapt quickly to the conditions and withstand Mexico's early pressure to progress in the tournament.
