Witch Doctor Claims Responsibility for Kane's Dismal Performance
A Ghanaian witch doctor, Nana Kwaku Bonsam, has announced that he has "released" England captain Harry Kane from a spiritual spell after Kane failed to score during England's goalless draw against Ghana in the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Tuesday in Massachusetts, USA. Bonsam, a self-proclaimed spiritualist, had publicly stated before the match that he would cast a spell on Kane to prevent him from scoring against Ghana.
In a video posted on social media, Bonsam said, as quoted by Reuters, "Now I am going to release Harry Kane so that, his next match, he can score. Harry, I will come and visit you. Don't be offended. We are friends." The statement came after Kane's lackluster performance, which saw him record just 19 touches during the entire match—the fewest he has ever had in a major tournament while playing 90 or more minutes for England, according to Sky Sports.
Kane's Tournament Performance So Far
Kane had a strong start to the World Cup, scoring a brace in England's 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening group match. However, against Ghana, he was largely ineffective, failing to make an impact and missing a key opportunity. Despite the poor outing, Kane remained philosophical about the miss, stating, "I was waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way. It did, and I just could not quite get over the ball. But I have been a striker long enough to know they do not always go in."
The goalless draw leaves England in a strong position in their group, with four points from two matches. They currently sit second behind Ghana, who have four points as well but lead on goal difference. England's final group stage match is against Panama on June 28 in New Jersey.
Bonsam's History of Football Spells
Nana Kwaku Bonsam is known for his claims of using supernatural powers to influence football matches. He has previously claimed to have cast spells on opposing players to benefit Ghanaian teams. His latest intervention targeted one of the world's most prolific strikers, but Kane's performance may have been more about tactical discipline and less about magic. England manager Gareth Southgate did not comment on the witch doctor's claims, focusing instead on the team's overall performance and preparation for the Panama match.
The draw against Ghana was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. England dominated possession but failed to break down a resolute Ghanaian defense. Kane's lack of service was evident, as he dropped deep to get involved but could not influence the game as he usually does.
