Harry Kane etched his name into the record books during England's opening FIFA World Cup match against Croatia, becoming the player with the most penalties scored in World Cup history. The England captain reached the milestone in his side's 4-2 victory, surpassing Argentine superstar Lionel Messi and Gabriel Batistuta, who previously held the record with four penalty goals each.
Match Overview
England kicked off their campaign against Croatia in the tournament's 15th match at Dallas Stadium in Arlington. Kane gave the Three Lions the perfect start when he won and converted a penalty in the 12th minute.
The striker's initial effort was saved by Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, but the penalty had to be retaken after defender Josko Gvardiol was called for encroachment. Kane stepped up once again and calmly fired a low shot into the same corner to open the scoring.
Croatia responded in the 36th minute with an equaliser that came somewhat against the run of play. Martin Baturina produced a brilliant right-footed finish that left Jordan Pickford with little chance despite the England goalkeeper getting a fingertip to the ball.
England regained control just before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Kane escaped his marker and timed his run perfectly from a corner kick, powering a header past Livaković to restore England's lead. However, there was still time for more drama before the break. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Petar Musa found the net to level the score once again and send the teams into halftime tied at 2-2.
Second Half Dominance
England took complete control after the restart. Jude Bellingham restored the lead just two minutes into the second half, scoring in the 47th minute. Marcus Rashford then put the result beyond doubt with a goal in the 85th minute, sealing a convincing 4-2 victory for Gareth Southgate's side.
Kane's opening penalty not only helped England secure all three points but also added another remarkable achievement to his growing list of records. Along with becoming the leader for most penalty goals scored in FIFA World Cup history, the England captain also equalled Lionel Messi's record for the most penalty attempts in the competition.
