The 26th Asian Senior Fencing Championship concluded on June 25, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking the first time India hosted this elite continental event. Japan emerged as the overall winner with 6 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals, while South Korea secured second place with 10 medals, dominating the sabre team brackets. Kazakhstan finished third, highlighted by a historic sweep in women's epee with 5 medals.
Over 400 Athletes from 34 Nations Compete
Under the motto "One Dream, One Blade, One Pride," the six-day championship brought together more than 400 athletes and delegates from over 34 countries. The event served as a crucial stepping stone for fencing programs aiming toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Competitions were held across all three weapons: foil, epee, and sabre, featuring both individual and team events.
India's Performance and Growing Fencing Infrastructure
India's top finishes included Prachi Lohan (women's epee) and Sachin (men's foil) ranking in the top 25. Tokyo Olympian C.A. Bhavani Devi and rising star Taniksha Khatri also delivered resilient performances, signaling India's narrowing gap with Asia's elite fencing nations. The Fencing Association of India (FAI) spearheaded the event, providing invaluable exposure to local athletes.
Spectacular Closing Ceremony Showcases Indian Heritage
The closing ceremony transformed Bharat Mandapam into a vibrant theatre of light, color, and cultural performances. Traditional Indian drumming and synchronized choreography captivated the audience, while the tournament mascot "Lakshya"—a tiger symbolizing speed and precision—joined the celebrations. Athletes paraded with flags, celebrating international camaraderie.
Key Addresses by Dignitaries
Kiren Rijiju, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs & Minority Affairs, attended as Chief Guest. He stated, "Fencing is a highly strategic, stylish sport with a significant number of Olympic medals up for grabs, offering India a tremendous opportunity to excel on the global stage. I am delighted to see it growing so rapidly among our youth." He congratulated all participants and reiterated government support for fencing development.
Anthony JR Donald, Vice-president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), praised the organization: "On behalf of the FIE, I express our sincere gratitude to the Fencing Federation of India and the people of New Delhi for their warm hospitality and excellent organisation, making this championship truly unforgettable." He invited fencers to carry the spirit forward to next year's championship in Abu Dhabi.
Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Confederation of Asia and FAI, extended a vote of thanks, acknowledging the support of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
Symbolic Handover to Next Hosts
The ceremony concluded with the extinguishing of the tournament flame and the lowering of the Fencing Confederation of Asia (FCA) flag, which was handed over to the hosts of the next edition. This marked the end of a historic chapter in Asian fencing, cementing India's reputation as a global hub for sports management.
