Tenth seed Karolina Muchova defeated fellow Czech and 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 on Sunday to secure a place in the quarter-finals at the All England Club. The match, played under warm sunshine on Court Two, was a tight contest for Czech supremacy, with Muchova producing an attacking display that included 50 winners to Krejcikova's 24.
Muchova's aggressive start pays off
Muchova, 29, used her athletic game of precise volleys, delicate drop-shots and searing cross-court winners to overcome Krejcikova, who is ranked 38th in the world and just eight months younger. The 10th seed stepped up her aggression in the 12th game of the first set, attacking Krejcikova's serve and winning the set with a sizzling cross-court backhand return.
She continued her momentum in the second set, wearing down her compatriot in a mammoth 16-minute sixth game, breaking on her fourth break point to take a 4-2 lead. However, Krejcikova, who also won the 2021 French Open, roared back to win five consecutive games, forcing a deciding set.
Krejcikova fights back but Muchova prevails
Muchova steadied her nerves in the third set, grabbing a break in the fourth game as Krejcikova appeared to tire in the heat. The 2023 French Open runner-up closed out the match with a lobbed forehand winner before hugging her opponent at the net. According to match statistics, Muchova struck 50 winners overall, while Krejcikova managed 24.
The victory sets up a quarter-final clash for Muchova, who is seeking her first Wimbledon title. Krejcikova, whose career has been beset by injury, was unable to replicate her 2024 championship run.
