Nagpur Heatwave Takes Toll on ITF Women's Tennis Tour Opening Round
The scorching afternoon heat in Nagpur proved too much for three players during the opening round of the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour at the NDHTA courts in Ram Nagar on Wednesday. Netherlands' Emma Van Poppel, Nepal's Abhilasha Bista, and India's seventh seed Akanksha Nitture all retired midway through their matches, unable to withstand the challenging conditions.
Seasoned Campaigners Advance with Ease
While the heat took its toll on some competitors, experienced players demonstrated their resilience. Fourth-seeded Ankita Raina, despite her lower seeding, showcased her brilliance with a commanding straight-sets victory over compatriot Soha Sadiq, winning 6-3, 6-4. Third-seeded Zeel Desai followed suit, securing her place in the pre-quarterfinals with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win against A Easwaramurthi.
Upset of the Day and Heat-Related Retirements
The day's only significant upset came from wild card entrant Kashish Bhatia, who stunned higher-ranked Bela Tamkhankar 6-1, 6-2. Bhatia will now face Madhurima Sawant, who advanced after Akanksha Nitture retired in the second set while trailing 0-2. Sawant had narrowly won the first set 7-6 (6) in a closely contested battle.
Sonal Patil forced Emma Van Poppel of the Netherlands to retire in the second set after winning the first set 6-4. When Van Poppel succumbed to the heat, Patil was leading 4-0 in the second set. In another heat-related incident, Abhilasha Bista retired against Germany's A Kuparev in the second set (with the score at 1-1) after losing the first set 0-6.
Doubles Walkover and Upcoming Pre-Quarterfinal Matches
The heat also affected doubles competition, with the Netherlands duo of Emma Van Poppel and Ekaterina Khodzhaeva giving a walkover to the India-Malaysia pair of Pooja Ingale and Elsa Wan in the women's doubles opening round.
Looking ahead to Thursday's women's singles pre-quarterfinals, top seed Vaishnavi Adkar will face Ksenia Laskutova, while second seed Zhibek Kulambayuva will square up against Pooja Ingale. Zeel Desai is set to take on Ekaterina Khodzhaeva, and Ankita Raina will face Sonal Patil in what promises to be an exciting day of tennis, weather permitting.
