Netherlands Thank Fans, Condemn Racist Abuse After WC Exit

The Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) issued a statement thanking players, staff, and supporters for their commitment during the FIFA World Cup 2026, while strongly condemning racist and discriminatory online reactions directed at players following the team's elimination.

"We thank the players, staff and all those involved for their commitment during this World Cup. We also express our appreciation for the supporters, in the stadium, at home and everywhere where Oranje was followed and supported. Football connects people, regardless of origin or background," the KNVB wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The statement continued: "We see online reactions in which players are treated in a racist and discriminatory manner after the elimination. We draw a clear line there. Racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in football, not online and not in our society."

Morocco Advances in Thrilling Penalty Shootout

African giants Morocco kept their World Cup 2026 dream alive with a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands after the sides were locked at 1-1 following extra time in a gripping Round of 32 encounter on June 29 local time in Monterrey, Mexico.

Netherlands players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville all missed their penalties in the shootout, allowing Morocco to secure the win. The match had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, setting the stage for the dramatic spot-kick decider.

Prime Minister Jetten Praises Football's Unifying Power

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten took to X to highlight the positive spirit displayed by fans and the unifying power of sports. He noted the massive Oranje fan marches that won hearts across the political spectrum and acknowledged the Moroccan-Dutch community's joyful celebration of Morocco's victory.

"After a thrilling match between Oranje and the Atlas Lions, the World Cup is unfortunately over for the Netherlands. It was incredible to see how sports bring people together. How Dutch fans from left to right won hearts with the massive Oranje fan walks. How the vast majority of the Moroccan-Dutch community celebrates their well-deserved victory in a positive way," Jetten wrote.

He also expressed support for forward Cody Gakpo during a difficult personal time for him and his family, and thanked both teams, wishing Morocco success in their upcoming match against Canada.

Morocco to Face Canada in Round of 16

Morocco will now face Canada in the first Round of 16 fixture at NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday, July 4 (local time), as they continue their historic run in the tournament. The Atlas Lions' victory over the Netherlands marks a significant achievement for African football on the global stage.

The KNVB's strong stance against online abuse reflects growing concerns over player welfare in the digital age, with football associations increasingly called upon to protect their athletes from hateful behavior.
