Rescue operation ends in tragedy
A 21-hour-long rescue operation to save a 4-year-old child who had fallen into a borewell in Ambala, Haryana, ended in tragedy on Wednesday as the child was brought out dead, officials confirmed. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the child accidentally slipped into an open borewell in a village near Ambala city.
Details of the incident
The child, identified as Rohan, was playing near the field when he fell into the 150-foot-deep borewell. Local residents immediately alerted the police and the district administration, prompting a massive rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities. A parallel borewell was dug to reach the child, and oxygen was supplied through pipes.
Challenges faced by rescue teams
The rescue teams faced several challenges, including loose soil and the narrow width of the borewell, which made it difficult to lower equipment. Despite continuous efforts, the child was found unresponsive when finally reached. According to a senior official, "The child was brought out but was declared dead by the medical team." The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Impact and reaction
The tragic end of the rescue operation has left the village in mourning. Local MLA expressed grief and announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family. The incident has once again raised questions about the safety measures around abandoned borewells in rural areas. Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident.
