Redknapp: England Must Be Ready for Altitude and Hostile Atmosphere
Jamie Redknapp has called on England to quickly adapt to the high-altitude conditions in Mexico City and the intense home crowd ahead of their World Cup Round of 16 match against Mexico. The former England midfielder stressed that while altitude training can help, the team has had limited preparation and must focus on starting strongly to deny Mexico early momentum.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp said: "You can try, and you can do all these things, train at the altitude or whatever it takes, but we haven't had that opportunity. Now we've just got to be ready. As I say, the subs are going to be so key in this game, but let's just make sure we're up for it and we start really well and make sure they don't get that impetus because the crowd are going to be partisan."
Discipline and Substitutes Key in High-Pressure Knockout
Redknapp emphasized the importance of discipline and using substitutes effectively in such a high-pressure environment. He noted that the atmosphere at the Estadio Azteca is expected to be highly charged, with Mexican fans known for their passionate support.
"I've watched a few games in Mexico and they are really up for their games and they get right behind the team and it's going to be an excitable crowd. Let's make sure we keep 11 men on the pitch, all the right things," he added.
England Yet to Find Rhythm, But One Win Could Spark Momentum
Redknapp observed that England have not fully found their rhythm in the tournament, aside from brief flashes in their match against Croatia. However, he suggested that a big win in this knockout match could provide the momentum needed for the rest of their campaign.
"But this should be one that we're really excited about because if we get through, I think this will then give us that momentum that we need because we haven't found that yet. The quality hasn't really been there. I haven't seen that real energy apart from that Croatia game, but it only takes one big win like this and everything can change," he concluded.
Mexico's Dominant Home Record and Altitude Challenge
England face a tough Mexico side with a formidable home record at the iconic Estadio Azteca. Since first playing at the venue in 1966, Mexico have lost just twice in competitive matches there. In 89 matches at the Azteca, they have recorded 70 wins and 17 draws, making them nearly unbeatable at home.
Additionally, Mexico have not conceded a single goal so far in the tournament, posing a stern defensive test for Harry Kane's men. The Round of 16 clash on July 6 will also see England contend with high-altitude conditions, as the pitch sits at approximately 7,220 feet above sea level.
