Karnataka Police Chief Mandates FIR for Sharing Intimate Images Without Consent

The Karnataka police chief has issued a directive stating that a First Information Report (FIR) must be registered in all cases where intimate images are shared without the consent of the person depicted. The directive aims to streamline the handling of cyber crime complaints and ensure that victims receive immediate legal recourse.

In a circular addressed to all police units across the state, the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Alok Mohan, reiterated that the registration of an FIR should not be delayed or declined on the grounds that the complainant had initially consented to the sharing of the images. The police chief emphasized that consent can be withdrawn at any point, and any subsequent sharing without explicit permission constitutes a violation of privacy and is a punishable offense under the law.

The directive comes in response to growing concerns over the misuse of intimate images, often shared on social media or through messaging platforms, leading to harassment, blackmail, and mental trauma for victims. The circular also instructs investigating officers to treat such cases with sensitivity and to ensure that the identity of the complainant is protected during the investigation.

The state police have been working to enhance their capabilities in handling digital evidence and to provide better support to victims. This latest directive is part of a broader effort to strengthen the legal framework and enforcement mechanisms to combat cyber crimes effectively.

Mohan also urged the public to be cautious about sharing personal content online and to report any instances of misuse promptly. He assured that the police would take strict action against offenders and that the legal process would be expedited to deliver justice to victims.
