The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, has announced the launch of an online Master of Technology (MTech) programme starting from the academic year 2026-27. This initiative aims to provide flexible learning opportunities for working professionals and students who cannot attend regular on-campus classes.
Programme Details
The online MTech programme will be offered in several specializations, including artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and other emerging fields. The curriculum is designed to be industry-relevant and will be delivered through a blend of live lectures, recorded sessions, and interactive online platforms. Students will have access to NITK's faculty and resources, ensuring a high-quality learning experience.
Admission and Eligibility
Admission to the programme will be based on the candidate's performance in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or an equivalent entrance examination. Eligible candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or technology with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks (or equivalent CGPA). Working professionals with relevant industry experience may also be given preference.
Benefits for Students
The online format allows students to balance their studies with professional and personal commitments. They can access course materials anytime, participate in virtual labs, and collaborate with peers through discussion forums. Upon completion, graduates will receive the same degree as on-campus students, without any mention of 'online' on the certificate.
Institutional Perspective
NITK Director, Professor B. R. Bhat, stated that the online MTech programme aligns with the institute's vision of leveraging technology to expand access to quality education. He emphasized that the programme will help bridge the skill gap in the industry by upskilling professionals in cutting-edge technologies.
Future Plans
NITK plans to introduce more online programmes in the future, including doctoral and certificate courses. The institute is also exploring partnerships with industry leaders to provide hands-on training and internship opportunities for online students.
Registrations for the online MTech programme are expected to begin in early 2026. Interested candidates can visit the official NITK website for more information and updates.
