The Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education has officially opened applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026. This initiative aims to attract Indian-origin researchers, scientists, and professionals currently working abroad to leading institutions and national laboratories in India for advanced research.
Application Process and Key Dates
Applications for both Fellows and Host Institutions commenced on 1 June 2026 via the official PMRC portal. The scheme targets 13 priority areas, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity, biotechnology, healthcare and medical technology, space and defence, energy and climate change, agriculture technology, and advanced materials.
Fellowship Categories
The programme offers three categories: Young Research Fellows, Senior Research Fellows, and Research Chairs, based on experience and research achievements. Selected fellows receive funding support, access to laboratories, and opportunities to collaborate with premier Indian institutions.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include Indian nationals working abroad, OCI cardholders, and Persons of Indian Origin with strong research credentials.
How to Apply for PMRC 2026
Candidates can apply by following these steps:
- Visit the official PMRC portal: pmrc.education.gov.in
- Prepare required documents, including curriculum vitae, proof of past work and education, citizenship details, research outputs, and preferred host institution details.
- Submit the application.
The last date to apply is 15 July 2026.
Lead Institutions
Seven lead institutions have been identified for the scheme: Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad, and Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru.
