Punjabi University has introduced a smart identity-cum-library card designed to digitise campus services and offer students, faculty, and staff a unified, secure identity system. The card was launched by Vice-Chancellor Dr Jagdeep Singh, who stated that the initiative would simplify access to various university services while promoting digital governance on campus. He emphasised that the project would enhance transparency, security, and efficiency, benefiting the entire university community.
Dual Functionality as ID and Library Card
The smart card functions both as an official university identity card and a library card. Users can borrow and return books and verify library membership instantly through the card, streamlining library operations. The card is expected to reduce the need for multiple cards and improve administrative efficiency.
Phased Integration with Campus Facilities
The university plans to integrate the card in phases with access to academic blocks, laboratories, and hostels. It will also be linked to the attendance system, examination services, and other campus facilities. This step-by-step approach aims to ensure smooth implementation and minimise disruptions.
Development and Launch Details
The project was developed by Amit Mittal, in-charge of Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha Library, in collaboration with Gulshan Bansal, coordinator of the centralised admission cell. The launch event was attended by Dean Academic Affairs Jaswinder Singh Brar, Registrar Davinderpal Singh Sidhu, and Finance Officer BB Singla. The card is seen as a major step towards modernising campus administration and improving user experience.
