New Delhi: A 25-year-old man allegedly linked to a sextortion gang that blackmailed victims using explicit videos has been arrested in Mewat. The accused has been identified as Abas Khan.
The case surfaced after a resident of Shalimar Bagh filed an online complaint reporting cyber fraud of ₹2.5 lakh. He stated that he first received a social media friend request from a woman, who during the conversation obtained his mobile number. Soon after, he received a WhatsApp video call during which an obscene clip was played, prompting him to disconnect.
Shortly thereafter, he began receiving messages claiming that his actions had been recorded and threatening to circulate the footage unless money was paid. Under coercion, he transferred Rs 2.52 lakh.
Police investigations led to the arrest of Abas Khan from Mewat. Authorities suspect he is part of a larger syndicate involved in similar cyber crimes. The accused has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
Officials urge citizens to be cautious of unsolicited friend requests and video calls from unknown persons. They advise not to share personal details and to report such incidents immediately to cyber crime helplines.
The arrest highlights the growing menace of sextortion in India, where fraudsters exploit social media to trap victims. Further investigations are underway to identify other members of the gang.
