Nashik to Implement Advanced AI Surveillance for 2027 Kumbh Mela

In preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027, Nashik city and Trimbakeshwar will see the deployment of an extensive surveillance network comprising over 4,000 AI-enabled closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and 18 surveillance drones. This initiative, spearheaded by the Nashik Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL), aims to revolutionize crowd monitoring and security management during one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

Comprehensive Camera Distribution and Strategic Placement

The project involves the installation of 4,011 cameras across key locations. Approximately 3,000 cameras will be positioned at 800 sites throughout Nashik city, while Trimbakeshwar will receive 700 cameras at around 200 points. An additional 300 cameras will be placed in rural areas, focusing on parking lots and other major venues associated with Kumbh-related activities. This strategic placement ensures coverage of high-density routes and festival hotspots, facilitating effective oversight.

AI-Driven Real-Time Alerts and Crowd Management

The AI-supported system is designed to provide real-time alerts and detect overcrowded zones, enabling authorities to make swift decisions during peak footfall periods. According to Shekhar Singh, commissioner of the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority, this technology will be instrumental in preventing crowd congestion. "The system will alert command-and-control centres immediately when any location becomes overcrowded, allowing for quick crowd diversion or increased deployment," Singh explained. He emphasized the system's critical role during the Amrit Snan days, which attract the largest influx of devotees.

Project Timeline and Integration Phases

The installation of all cameras is targeted for completion by March 2026, followed by a detailed integration phase. Final integration with central command centres, drone monitoring, and data analytics is scheduled to be finalized by March 2027. This will establish a unified real-time monitoring system ahead of the Kumbh Mela, ensuring seamless operation and enhanced security.

Financial Investment and Technological Enhancements

The estimated cost of the entire project is around Rs300 crore, with Rs60 crore allocated for expenditure by March 2026. The project also includes the establishment of a modern data centre, integration of drone feeds, and linkage of all CCTVs with the smart city's command-and-control rooms. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure smooth pilgrim movement and strengthen overall security during the religious event.

By leveraging advanced technology, the NMSCDCL expects this surveillance network to significantly improve the management of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, making it safer and more organized for millions of participants.
