Mukesh Ambani Announces Monumental $110 Billion AI Investment for India

In a landmark announcement on Thursday, Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani revealed that his conglomerate has committed to investing a staggering $110 billion, equivalent to approximately Rs 10 lakh crore, to establish India's sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure. This ambitious initiative is designed to align with India's growing technological aspirations and will unfold over a seven-year period, focusing on critical components such as data centers and a nationwide edge compute network.

Building the Backbone of AI: Data Centers and Green Energy

Ambani emphasized that data centers serve as the fundamental backbone of artificial intelligence, housing the high-performance chips and servers necessary for training and operating large AI models. These processes demand immense computing power and are accompanied by significant electricity consumption. To address this, Reliance Industries and its telecom arm Jio are spearheading efforts to "connect India to the intelligence era," building on their previous success in providing affordable broadband connectivity across the nation.

Describing the investment as "patient, disciplined nation-building capital," Ambani stressed that India "cannot afford to rent intelligence" and must aggressively reduce the cost of compute, mirroring the dramatic reduction in data costs achieved earlier. He highlighted recent progress, noting that construction has already commenced on multi-gigawatt AI-ready data centers in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with over 120 megawatts expected to become operational in the second half of 2026. These facilities will be supported by up to 10 gigawatts of green energy capacity sourced from Kutch and Andhra Pradesh, underscoring a commitment to sustainable development.

Nationwide Edge Network and Policy Support

A key component of this initiative is the development of a nationwide edge layer, seamlessly integrated with Jio's extensive telecom network. This infrastructure will bring low-latency AI services closer to end-users, benefiting diverse sectors from local kirana stores to agricultural farms and healthcare clinics. The timing of this investment is further bolstered by anticipated policy support, with the Union Budget 2026-27 expected to introduce a tax holiday until 2047 for foreign cloud service providers utilizing Indian data centers for global operations, potentially fueling growth in the data center industry.

Guiding Principles of Jio Intelligence

Ambani outlined five core principles guiding what he termed "Jio Intelligence," which will shape India's AI trajectory:

  • Development of multilingual AI systems across Indian languages to ensure inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Emphasis on data residency and security to protect national interests and user privacy.
  • Focus on productivity-led use cases that drive economic efficiency and innovation.
  • Job creation through high-skill employment opportunities in the AI sector.
  • Ecosystem partnerships with enterprises, startups, IITs, and research institutions to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.

He cautioned that AI development should be driven by "social relevance, not momentary craze," advocating for global cooperation in critical areas such as semiconductor chips and essential minerals, while warning against hoarding and polarization that could hinder progress.

AI as a Transformative Force

Reflecting on the profound impact of artificial intelligence, Ambani remarked, "For the first time, humans are creating human-like systems that can learn, speak, analyse, move and produce autonomously. AI is the Mantra that powers every Yantra or every machine and system, enabling them to work faster, better and smarter." He poetically likened AI to a "modern-day Akshay Patra," referencing the legendary vessel from the Mahabharata that provided endless nourishment, symbolizing AI's potential to sustainably empower and enrich society.

With this visionary investment, Ambani expressed confidence that "India will emerge as one of the greatest AI powers in the world in the 21st century," positioning the nation at the forefront of the global intelligence revolution.
