Anthropic Faces US Government Opposition Ahead of Potential $1 Trillion IPO
Anthropic Faces US Government Opposition Ahead of IPO

Anthropic has confidentially filed to go public as soon as this fall, capitalizing on its success story of dominating the enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) market. However, as the startup prepares for a public offering that could carry a valuation of nearly $1 trillion, it faces an existential crisis that persists: the US government is acting as its direct adversary.

Government Blacklisting and Model Shutdowns

The federal government has now blacklisted Anthropic twice, forcing potential investors to weigh whether the company's recently gained massive valuation will suffer because Washington is willing to shut down its flagship products overnight, according to a report by Fortune.

The latest escalation came after an announcement in which Anthropic was forced to take its two newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, completely offline. The sudden shutdown was triggered by a US Commerce Department order barring foreign nationals from using the software. This follows a previous blacklisting by the federal government over national security concerns.

Trump Government's Aggressive Stance

The government's approach toward the tech giant has been public and aggressive. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth took a victory lap on social media, signaling that the administration has no plans to back down. "Three months ago, [the Department of War] kicked Anthropic out of our building—forever. Every passing day proves why that was the right move," Hegseth posted recently.

Even as Anthropic rushed senior technical staff to Washington over the weekend to desperately fight the export controls, the Department of War announced it has already migrated at least two-thirds of its AI workflows away from Anthropic's models. The fallout stems from a previous clash between the two entities over the military applications of Anthropic's Claude AI.

The department stated that it "will no longer be single-threaded to one AI provider" and will instead equip warfighters with "a diverse suite of AI capabilities to ensure they achieve true decision superiority."

Industry-Wide Implications

Analysts warn that the unpredictable, reactive style of government regulation will cause severe collateral damage across the entire tech sector. The aggressive enforcement could create a chilling effect on research and development. Competitors like OpenAI may now hesitate to launch next-generation models out of fear that a sudden government order could instantly erase billions of dollars in projected revenue.
