Krishnagiri: In a daring heist, unidentified burglars drilled through the rear wall of a jewellery shop at Varattanapalli village near Krishnagiri and made off with nearly 3kg of silver articles valued at Rs 12 lakh on Friday night. The crime came to light early Saturday morning when the shop owner, Saravanan, opened Bragadeeswarar Jewellery and discovered valuables scattered inside.
Advanced Equipment Used
Police revealed that the burglars employed advanced drilling equipment to bore through the side wall during the night, gaining entry into the shop. The gang also attempted to break open an iron locker containing gold jewellery but failed, according to Krishnagiri District Superintendent of Police P Thangadurai. He noted that the locker key was hanging inside the shop but went unnoticed by the intruders. As a result, nearly 2kg of gold ornaments stored inside remained untouched.
Investigation Underway
Following Saravanan’s complaint, Bargur police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. SP Thangadurai also inspected the crime scene. Fingerprint experts collected evidence, and sniffer dogs were deployed to track the burglars. Police have formed special teams to hunt down the culprits.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of jewellery shops in rural areas. Authorities are urging shop owners to enhance security measures, including installing CCTV cameras and alarm systems. The stolen silver articles included various ornaments and utensils commonly used in households and temples.
Local residents expressed shock over the incident, as Varattanapalli is a relatively quiet village. Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the burglars. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
