Elon Musk Unveils Grok 4.20 Beta from xAI with Enhanced AI Capabilities

Elon Musk has officially announced the release of the first beta version of Grok 4.20, the latest iteration of the AI chatbot developed by his company, xAI. In a characteristic move, Musk chose the version number 4.20 as a playful reference to internet culture, but he emphasizes that this update brings substantial improvements over previous versions.

Performance and Learning Upgrades in Grok 4.20

According to Musk, Grok 4.20 is designed to be "an order of magnitude smarter and faster" than the standard Grok 4. The new version features a "rapid learning" architecture, enabling continuous weekly enhancements. In a post on X, Musk stated, "The Grok 4.2 release candidate (public beta) is now available for use. You need to select it specifically. Critical feedback is appreciated. Unlike prior versions of Grok, 4.2 is able to learn rapidly, so there will be improvements every week with release notes."

New Real-World Applications: Medicine and Engineering

While earlier versions of Grok were known for their wit and real-time access to X data, Musk is now positioning Grok 4.20 as a high-level expert tool. The announcement highlights two major capabilities:

  • Medical Applications: Users can upload files or take photos of their medical data to receive second opinions from the AI chatbot.
  • Engineering Support: The model is starting to correctly answer open-form engineering questions, as noted by Musk in another post.

Musk explained, "You can just take a picture of your medical data or upload the file to get a second opinion from Grok," and added, "Long way to go, but Grok 4.20 is starting to get open form engineering questions right."

Ongoing Development and Bug Fixes

Musk assured users that Grok 4.20 is not only smarter and faster but also under active development with daily bug fixes. He announced, "Grok 4.2 will be about an order of magnitude smarter and faster than Grok 4 when the public beta concludes next month. Still many bug fixes and improvements landing every day. The public beta gives us more critical feedback to address."

How to Access Grok 4.20 Beta

To try the new version, users need to log in to X, open the Grok interface, navigate to the model selection menu, and select "Grok 4.20 (Beta)". This beta phase aims to gather user feedback for further refinements before the full release.
