Elon Musk Launches Scathing Attack on Rival AI Company Anthropic
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has launched a fierce verbal assault on artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, accusing its AI models of being "misanthropic and evil." This criticism comes hot on the heels of Anthropic's announcement of a massive $30 billion funding round, which valued the company at an astonishing $380 billion.
Funding Announcement Sparks Musk's Fury
The controversy ignited when Anthropic revealed on social media platform X that it had successfully closed one of the largest private technology funding rounds in history. "We've raised $30B in funding at a $380B post-money valuation," the company stated. "This investment will help us deepen our research, continue to innovate in products, and ensure we have the resources to power our infrastructure expansion as we make Claude available everywhere our customers are."
Musk, never one to shy away from confrontation, responded directly to this post with explosive allegations. He claimed that Anthropic's AI systems demonstrate clear racial and demographic biases. "Your AI hates Whites & Asians, especially Chinese, heterosexuals and men. This is misanthropic and evil. Fix it," Musk wrote. He further mocked the company's name, suggesting an ironic fate: "Frankly, I don't think there is anything you can do to escape the inevitable irony of Anthropic ending up being Misanthropic. You were doomed to this fate when you chose your name."
Intensifying Rivalry in the AI Arena
The public spat highlights the deepening rivalry between Musk's own AI venture, xAI, and Anthropic, which is led by CEO Dario Amodei. Anthropic is best known for its Claude family of large language models, while xAI competes directly with its chatbot Grok. Tensions have been simmering for months, particularly after reports surfaced that Anthropic had cut off xAI's access to its Claude models.
This is not the first time Musk has taken aim at Anthropic's nomenclature. Previously, he remarked, "Always worth remembering that fate loves irony. The most ironic outcome for a company named [Anthropic] would be that it is the most misanthropic!" The ongoing feud underscores the highly competitive and often contentious landscape of the artificial intelligence industry.
Legal Troubles Emerge in India
Compounding Anthropic's challenges, the company now faces significant legal hurdles in India. A local software firm, Anthropic Software, founded in 2017, has filed a complaint in a commercial court in Karnataka. The Indian company argues that the US-based AI giant's expansion into the Indian market has caused substantial customer confusion due to the identical name.
Anthropic Software is seeking official recognition of its prior use of the name, legal measures to prevent further confusion, and damages amounting to Rs 10 million (approximately $110,000). Mohammad Ayyaz Mulla, founder and director of Anthropic Software, expressed regret over the situation. "Litigation was not the company's first choice but became necessary to protect identity," he stated. "As of now, I am exercising my legal right as it's causing huge confusion to my customers. Coexistence would have been preferable if clarity could be achieved."
This trademark dispute adds another layer of complexity to Anthropic's global ambitions, potentially impacting its operations and brand perception in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing technology markets.
