We are entering an era where people increasingly place greater trust in a machine that holds no licence, owes no ethical duty, bears no professional liability, and has never stood before a judge, than in an advocate who has spent years mastering the discipline of law. What began years ago with the phenomenon of "Doctor Google" in the medical profession has now reached the legal world in a far more sophisticated and dangerous form - the rise of what may be called the "GPT-lawyer."

The Rise of the "GPT-Lawyer"

Today, advocates are no longer merely consulted for advice. Increasingly, clients walk into chambers carrying pre-packaged legal opinions generated through a five-second AI prompt, convinced that a machine-generated response represents strategic legal wisdom. The consultation room, which was once a space of professional trust and legal assessment, is slowly turning into a battlefield where years of human expertise are measured against algorithmic confidence. The irony is difficult to miss. A client willingly pays substantial fees for legal representation, yet simultaneously attempts to test the competence of the very advocate they have hired through a chatbot that bears no accountability whatsoever for the outcome. This shift is not merely technological; it is psychological. It reflects the rise of AI-induced overconfidence, the dangerous assumption that access to information is equivalent to understanding the law itself. But law has never functioned merely through information. Law operates through interpretation, timing, procedural nuance, strategic instinct, judicial psychology, ethical responsibility and lived courtroom experience. A statute book alone has never won a case. If law were merely about reproducing sections and judgments, the best libraries would produce the best advocates. Yet every seasoned litigator knows that courtrooms are governed as much by human perception and strategy as by textual law.

Why Law Is More Than Information

An advocate's expertise is not downloaded instantly. It is forged over years of academic rigour, bar examinations, internships, failures, procedural learning, late-night drafting, courtroom pressure, cross-examinations, negotiations, appearances and arguments before judges with entirely different temperaments and approaches. The practice of law gradually builds something no machine presently possesses - legal instinct. An experienced advocate often senses when a judge is unconvinced, when a witness is withholding truth, when a technical argument may irritate the court rather than persuade it, or when settlement is strategically wiser than aggression. These judgments do not emerge from data alone. They emerge from years spent navigating uncertainty in real courtrooms.

Artificial Intelligence, however advanced, does not "understand" law in the human sense. It predicts statistically probable text based on patterns within enormous datasets. It can undoubtedly summarise provisions, organise research, suggest drafting structures and provide broad informational assistance. But law is not an objective mathematical equation where the correct answer always emerges from textual prediction. Law exists within human systems governed by various variables like - discretion, context, morality, procedure and interpretation etc. AI may know the words contained in a judgment, but it does not understand the silence between those words - the judicial hesitation, the strategic compromise, the practical limitation or the emotional undertone that experienced advocates instinctively recognise.

When Artificial Intelligence Hallucinates the Law

The most dangerous aspect of this growing dependence on AI is not that machines occasionally make mistakes. The real danger is that they make mistakes confidently. Around the world, courts are increasingly witnessing the alarming phenomenon of "hallucinated law," where AI systems fabricate judgments, invent citations, merge unrelated legal principles, or confidently produce entirely inaccurate legal propositions. Unlike a human professional, who may admit uncertainty or lack of clarity, AI is designed to generate responses with persuasive confidence even when the information is incorrect.

The consequences of such blind reliance are no longer hypothetical. In the United States, lawyers were publicly sanctioned after submitting court filings containing AI-generated judgments that simply did not exist. The court later discovered that the legal authorities cited in the pleadings were fabricated by the AI system. The embarrassment was not suffered by the algorithm but it was suffered by the advocates whose professional credibility came under scrutiny before the judiciary. In another internationally discussed incident, an airline passenger relied upon incorrect legal assurances provided by an AI chatbot regarding refund entitlements, resulting in litigation and reputational complications once the company disowned the chatbot's representations. Globally, businesses are increasingly realising that unverified AI-generated legal advice can expose them to contractual disputes, compliance failures, procedural defaults, regulatory penalties and significant financial losses. Similar cases have occurred in India too.

The One Thing AI Cannot Carry is 'Accountability'

And this reveals the fundamental distinction between AI and a practising advocate: Accountability. A machine will never stand before a judge explaining why an incorrect argument was advanced. A chatbot will never face professional misconduct proceedings, contempt jurisdiction or reputational destruction because of a failed strategy. The advocate bears the burden of every legal consequence. That responsibility cannot be outsourced to software.

The Courtroom Is Still Deeply Human

Perhaps the greatest misunderstanding in the modern legal discourse is the assumption that litigation is merely textual. It is not. A courtroom is a profoundly human environment. Advocacy involves understanding personalities, pressure, psychology, timing and persuasion. No artificial intelligence can presently read the changing mood of a courtroom, assess the body language of a judge, recognise the hesitation of a witness during cross-examination, calm an anxious client moments before testimony or strategically pivot during oral arguments when the court begins leaning in an unexpected direction. Some of the finest legal victories are achieved not because an advocate knew more law than the opponent, but because the advocate understood the human dynamics unfolding inside the courtroom.

This is why the increasing erosion of attorney-client trust is deeply concerning. The consultation room is gradually transforming from a collaborative space into one of algorithmic interrogation. Clients increasingly approach advocates saying, "AI told me this section applies," or "The chatbot says this case guarantees bail," or "The internet says the court cannot do this." The irony is staggering. Clients are willing to trust a free digital tool with no ethical obligations more readily than a professional who is legally and morally bound to protect their interests. In doing so, many unknowingly sabotage their own cases by mistaking superficial information for strategic legal wisdom.

Why Legal Strategy Cannot Be Prompted

The truth is that legal strategy cannot be crowdsourced through prompts. An advocate's role is not merely to provide answers. It is to identify risks clients themselves may not even perceive. A good advocate protects clients not only from opponents, but often from their own impulsive decisions, unrealistic expectations, incomplete understanding of law and dangerous overconfidence. AI may provide a map, but only an experienced advocate understands where the bridge has collapsed, where the road is politically blocked, where procedure will intervene, or where the law, though technically favourable, may strategically fail in practice.

The Ethical Vacuum of Artificial Intelligence

Another dimension often ignored in discussions around AI is ethics. Advocates operate within a framework of professional responsibility, fiduciary duty, confidentiality and accountability toward both the client and the court. Artificial Intelligence has no ethical consciousness. It does not understand privilege, reputational sensitivity, conflict of interest, professional restraint or moral consequences. It cannot distinguish between what is legally arguable and what is ethically defensible. Yet justice itself depends precisely upon that distinction.

A Tool, Not a Substitute

None of this diminishes the extraordinary utility of Artificial Intelligence. AI is undoubtedly revolutionising legal research, administrative efficiency, drafting assistance, document review and information management. It is a remarkable tool. But a tool is not a substitute for professional judgment. The danger begins when society mistakes convenience for competence and speed for wisdom.

The smartest clients today are not those who blindly substitute professional advice with AI-generated responses. They are those who understand the limits of technology and use AI only as a preliminary informational aid while recognising that real legal decisions still require validation from experienced practising advocates. When liberty, reputation, property, livelihood or constitutional rights are at stake, people do not merely need information; they need wisdom, strategy, accountability and human judgment. And perhaps that remains the most reassuring truth of all.

The Law Still Needs a Human Face

Artificial Intelligence may one day draft better documents, process faster research and organise more information than any individual lawyer. But law will continue to require something machines still cannot replicate - human conscience, human instinct and the courage to stand before a court carrying responsibility for another person's fate.
