In a landmark development for India's sovereign artificial intelligence ambitions, homegrown startup Sarvam has officially launched a foundational large language model (LLM) boasting an impressive 105 billion parameters. This strategic move is accompanied by a comprehensive suite of tools and systems specifically designed to drive commercial adoption and real-world application.

Performance Benchmarks Surpass Global Competitors

The company asserts that its newly unveiled model delivers performance metrics on par with both open-source and proprietary models of comparable scale. This includes advanced capabilities in agentic functions and tool-calling operations. Co-founder Pratyush Kumar provided compelling data, revealing that the model has outperformed the 600-billion-parameter Deepseek R1 model released in the previous year. "This achievement unequivocally demonstrates that India possesses the capability to construct state-of-the-art AI models entirely from the ground up," Kumar stated emphatically. He elaborated that the model's parameter count was meticulously selected based on rigorous analysis of practical, real-world use cases, rather than merely pursuing the highest possible number. The expectation is for performance to see continuous enhancement through ongoing training and refinement processes.

For context, leading global models developed by entities like OpenAI are reportedly constructed with parameter counts reaching into the trillions, highlighting the competitive landscape.

The startup was among the first AI ventures selected under the India AI Mission in April of last year, with the explicit goal of developing sovereign AI models.
