Thyroid diseases are increasingly prevalent worldwide. In the United States alone, approximately 20 million individuals suffer from some form of thyroid condition. Since the thyroid gland primarily regulates metabolic rate, even minor imbalances can lead to significant health complications.

The Role of Selenium in Thyroid Function

While adhering to prescribed medications is crucial for managing thyroid levels, certain foods can enhance thyroid function. Dr Pal Manickam, a board-certified gastroenterologist based in California, emphasizes the importance of selenium, an often-overlooked nutrient critical for thyroid health. “One of the main nutrients that helps in maintaining thyroid activity and metabolism is selenium,” he stated in an Instagram video.

Selenium is a micronutrient that serves as a building block for selenoproteins, essential proteins in the human body. Remarkably, the thyroid gland contains the highest concentration of selenium compared to any other organ. “Selenium levels in the body depend on population characteristics, diet, geographic area, and soil composition. In the thyroid, selenium is required for antioxidant function and metabolism of thyroid hormones,” Dr Pal explained.

He further elaborated: “Selenium is very crucial for your thyroid gland. Many people diagnosed with hypothyroidism or taking thyroxine supplements often have a lower metabolic rate, leading to weight gain. Selenium helps maintain thyroid activity and metabolism.”

Brazil Nuts: A Selenium Superfood

Among all food sources, Brazil nuts are exceptionally rich in selenium. A single Brazil nut contains approximately 75 micrograms of selenium. For healthy adults, the daily requirement is 55 micrograms per day. However, patients with hypothyroidism can safely consume up to 400 micrograms daily, according to Dr Pal.

Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid disease, occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient hormones, resulting in a slow metabolism and unintentional weight gain. Individuals with this condition often experience persistent fatigue.

Despite the benefits, Dr Pal cautions against excessive consumption: “It is absolutely important not to go overboard. Two to three Brazil nuts per day will suffice.”

Other Selenium-Rich Foods

Besides Brazil nuts, numerous foods contain selenium. Excellent animal-based options include fish, eggs, milk, and yogurt. Plant-based choices include sunflower seeds and mushrooms.
