Trevor Bauer is forcing baseball into an uncomfortable conversation again, this time with a proposal that sounds nearly impossible in modern professional sports. The former Cy Young winner says he is willing to sign a minor league contract for zero salary just for the chance to pitch his way back to the majors. For a player who once secured a $102 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the offer feels less like a negotiation tactic and more like a public challenge directed at every front office in baseball.
Trevor Bauer Proposes a $0 Salary Deal
Bauer, now 35, has spent the last few years outside Major League Baseball after sexual assault allegations from multiple women led to a lengthy suspension under MLB's domestic violence policy. He has denied all allegations and has never been criminally charged. Teams have still stayed away. So Bauer decided to present what he believes is a no-risk scenario: give him a shot, pay him nothing, and release him immediately if anything goes wrong.
Bauer laid out the idea on Friday on X, arguing that any MLB organization could sign him to a minor league contract and evaluate him from the bottom of the system upward. "Hypothetical: You're the owner of an MLB team," Bauer wrote. "I offer to take $0 salary and sign a minor league contract and go to Low A. If the 'he sucks now' crowd is right and I get lit up, you cut me, lose $0 and there's no risk to the big league club."
He kept pushing the point further, addressing concerns about chemistry and public backlash in the same thread. "If the 'clubhouse cancer' crowd is right, you see it immediately at Low A and cut me. You lose $0 and there's no risk to the big league club. If there's massive negative PR, which we already know there won't be, you just cut me and move on."
Bauer believes his recent stretch with the Long Island Ducks strengthens that argument. He pointed to sold-out crowds, a recent no-hitter, and the lack of public protests surrounding his appearances in New York. "Where has the negative PR been?" Bauer wrote. "I'm playing in America. In New York of all places. Most 'hostile' media market in the United States. Stadiums are sold out when I pitch. There's no boycotts. No media frenzy. Where is it?"
Why Did Trevor Bauer Offer to Work for Free?
Bauer has not pitched in MLB since June 2021. Despite reinstatement after his suspension was reduced from 324 games to 194, no franchise has been willing to bring him back. Bauer insists money is no longer the issue. According to him, removing financial commitment also removes hesitation from teams. He even suggested organizations could control his social media activity and release him instantly if he failed to cooperate. "You could take away my 'antics'. You could take away my social media. You could ask anything of me. If I don't comply, you cut me, lose $0, and there's no risk to the big league club."
That frustration surfaced again when one user questioned why he does not simply tone things down himself. "Because no teams actually care about that," Bauer responded. "They enjoy the content. And I'm not going to rob baseball fans of great baseball entertainment just to solve a problem that only exists in the minds of x bots."
What Is Trevor Bauer's Current MLB Status?
At the moment, Bauer remains outside MLB, continuing his comeback attempt in independent baseball. The former Major League Baseball All-Star has pitched in Japan, Mexico, and now with the Long Island Ducks while waiting for another opportunity. Bauer owns an 83-69 career record, a 3.79 ERA, and more than 1,400 strikeouts. On talent alone, few doubt he can still get hitters out.
