Bengaluru has reported a staggering 17,561 cybercrime cases in 2024, accounting for more than 50% of all cybercrimes registered across India's top metropolitan cities, according to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). This alarming figure highlights the city's vulnerability to digital fraud and cyberattacks, driven by its status as a major tech hub.
Cybercrime Surge in Bengaluru
The NCRB report, which compiles crime statistics from across the country, reveals that Bengaluru's cybercrime tally far exceeds that of other major cities. In comparison, cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad reported significantly lower numbers. The data underscores the growing threat of cybercriminals targeting individuals and businesses in the Silicon Valley of India.
Types of Cybercrimes Reported
The cases include a wide range of offenses such as online financial fraud, identity theft, phishing attacks, hacking, and social media scams. Financial fraud alone constitutes a major chunk, with victims losing crores of rupees to sophisticated phishing and vishing schemes. The rise of UPI-based frauds and fake loan apps has also contributed to the surge.
Reasons Behind High Numbers
Experts attribute Bengaluru's high cybercrime rate to its dense population of tech-savvy individuals, widespread use of digital payments, and a large number of startups and IT companies. The city's rapid digitalization has created more opportunities for cybercriminals, who exploit vulnerabilities in systems and human psychology.
Response from Authorities
The Bengaluru City Police have ramped up efforts to combat cybercrime, setting up dedicated cybercrime units and awareness campaigns. However, the sheer volume of cases poses a challenge. The police urge citizens to report incidents promptly and follow cybersecurity best practices, such as using strong passwords and avoiding suspicious links.
The NCRB data serves as a wake-up call for both authorities and residents to strengthen their defenses against the growing menace of cybercrime in Bengaluru.
