This new-age scam, which has been quietly spreading across the city, involves fraudsters masquerading as organizers of curated dating events on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.
How the Scam Operates: From Movie Dates to Luxury Getaways
The fraudsters lure individuals with enticing offers that range from casual movie dates to luxurious getaway trips, only to disappear after collecting payments. In one common variant, they promote 'movie date' packages priced at approximately Rs 2,000, promising a multiplex ticket, snacks, and the company of a 'mystery partner.' Victims are assured they will be added to a private group shortly before the show to coordinate the meeting. However, upon arriving at the venue, they find no such group exists, and the organizer becomes completely unreachable.
In a more elaborate scheme, scammers offer 'outdoor date experiences' to destinations such as Mount Abu or Udaipur, with packages costing between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000. These deals falsely claim to include hotel bookings, drinks, and curated social activities. After victims transfer the advance payment, they later discover that no reservations were made, and the contact numbers have been switched off, leaving them stranded and humiliated.

A 24-year-old man from Gandhinagar shared his distressing experience, stating he waited outside a multiplex for over an hour after paying Rs 2,000. 'They assured me I would get details before the show, but no group was formed. Calls went unanswered,' he recounted. Similarly, a 27-year-old woman from Ahmedabad described losing Rs 9,500 for a Mount Abu trip. 'There was no hotel booking. It was humiliating to explain to friends,' she said, highlighting the emotional impact of the scam.
