The DigiYatra platform, which uses facial recognition technology to enable contactless and seamless passenger movement at airports, will be expanded to 27 additional airports by next year, the civil aviation ministry announced on Saturday. The initiative, currently operational at 38 airports, has seen significant adoption across the country, according to a PTI report.
Key Achievements of DigiYatra
The ministry stated that the DigiYatra app has facilitated over 10 crore seamless journeys and recorded more than 2.4 crore downloads. By replacing manual document verification, the platform has reduced average airport entry processing times from 15 seconds to just 5 seconds per passenger.
Minister's Statement on Future Plans
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu noted that annual passenger traffic across Indian airports is projected to reach 50 crore by 2030 and nearly double to around 100 crore by 2040. "Right now, DigiYatra is active at 38 airports, and by next year, 27 more airports will be enabled," he said. The minister also mentioned that the app currently supports 11 languages, with plans to add support for 11 more regional languages by the end of this year.
Data Security and Privacy
The ministry emphasized that passenger data shared through DigiYatra remains encrypted and is securely stored on the user's device. The data is shared only for a limited duration with the origin airport for immediate verification purposes, ensuring privacy and security.
