Gurgaon Woman Files Cyber Harassment Complaint Over Fake Social Media Profile
A distressing case of cyber harassment has emerged in Gurgaon, where a woman has filed a formal complaint after an unknown individual created a fake Facebook profile using photographs of her and her teenage daughter. The profile, allegedly under the name "Raju MD," was used to upload obscene and defamatory content, causing significant psychological distress and reputational harm to both victims.
Police Action and FIR Registration
According to police officials, the complaint was initially received through the national cyber crime reporting portal on December 29, 2025. After being entered into the ministry of home affairs complaint register, it underwent preliminary verification and was subsequently converted into a formal First Information Report (FIR) on Tuesday. The case has now been assigned to a dedicated cyber crime team for further investigation.
Details of the Harassment
The accused reportedly took screenshots from the woman's lifestyle and cooking videos posted on social media, reposting them with derogatory Bengali captions and sexually explicit messages. Police stated that the fake account was used to monitor the woman's public posts, extracting images of both her and her daughter. These images were then shared with offensive captions and false claims, with the minor's photographs also circulated through another account along with objectionable videos, allegedly to misrepresent the victims and damage their reputation.
Victim's Account and Background
The complainant, a Gurgaon resident who works as a house help, revealed that the harassment intensified after she posted a video confronting the alleged perpetrator. She claimed that more objectionable material was uploaded thereafter, including images involving her daughter. "It feels like a deliberate attempt to damage our reputation among relatives and neighbours. My daughter is deeply disturbed by what is being shared online," she told reporters. Despite reporting the matter, the fake profile remained active, adding to their distress.
In her complaint, the woman suggested that the harassment might be linked to a financial dispute related to an informal savings group. She alleged that a former acquaintance had proposed a marriage arrangement for her daughter to settle a debt, which she refused, potentially triggering the cyber attacks.
Investigation and Legal Implications
Police sources indicated that preliminary digital evidence points to the accused possibly operating from Itahar in West Bengal, with verification currently underway. The cyber crime team will examine technical evidence, identify the person behind the fake account, and coordinate with social media platforms to remove the harmful content. Officials reiterated that impersonation, creation of fake profiles, and sharing obscene or defamatory material online are punishable offences under the law. They advised citizens to report such cyber crimes through official channels for prompt action and resolution.
