Indore Police Issues Alert on Cyber Frauds Targeting Taxpayers

As the financial year concludes and taxpayers begin filing their Income Tax Returns (ITR), authorities in Indore have issued a critical warning about a significant increase in cyber frauds associated with tax-related activities. The police caution that criminals are exploiting this busy period to target unsuspecting citizens through sophisticated scams.

Modus Operandi of Cyber Criminals

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotiya explained that cyber criminals are employing various deceptive tactics. They send fraudulent messages, emails, and make phone calls impersonating officials from the Income Tax Department. These communications often claim to assist with ITR filing, refund processing, or corrections to tax documents.

Fraudsters frequently distribute misleading links that appear to help taxpayers update their Know Your Customer (KYC) details or fix errors in their tax filings. Once individuals click on these links, they are prompted to provide sensitive personal and financial information, including bank account details, login credentials, and One-Time Passwords (OTPs). This data is then misused to illegally withdraw funds from victims' accounts.

Official-Looking Messages Trap Victims

Officials noted that many people have fallen victim to these scams because the fraudulent messages are crafted to closely mimic official correspondence from the Income Tax Department. These messages typically offer promises of quick tax refunds or issue warnings about pending corrections in tax filings, creating a sense of urgency that leads recipients to act without proper verification.

"In the recent past, many such incidents were reported at the crime branch in Indore," Dandotiya stated, highlighting the local impact of these cyber crimes.

Safety Guidelines for Taxpayers

To protect themselves, authorities emphasize that all ITR-related activities should be conducted exclusively through the official Income Tax Department portal. This includes filing returns, making corrections, and checking refund statuses.

Citizens are strongly advised to verify the authenticity of any communication they receive regarding tax matters before responding. This vigilance is particularly crucial during the tax filing season when fraudulent attempts tend to spike. By staying alert and using only official channels, taxpayers can safeguard their financial information and avoid falling prey to these cyber scams.
