Patna Youth Swindled of Rs 29 Lakh in Elaborate Dating App Scam
In a distressing incident from Patna, a 27-year-old private sector employee has been defrauded of a staggering Rs 29 lakh by an unidentified woman he connected with on a dating application. The victim, who has requested anonymity from the media, fell prey to a sophisticated emotional and financial manipulation scheme that exploited his trust and aspirations for a secure future.
How the Scam Unfolded
The fraudulent interaction began when the youth, whose identity remains protected, matched with a woman identifying herself as Rachel on a popular dating platform. Within a short span, their communication escalated from casual chats to intense emotional exchanges, facilitated by a swift move to WhatsApp where they shared personal photos and videos.
The conversation took a serious turn as Rachel began discussing marriage and plans for a shared life, creating a bond that made the victim vulnerable to her subsequent demands. To advance their relationship, she insisted that he make a significant investment to ensure their financial stability, directing him to a fraudulent website with promises of doubling any amount invested.
Financial Loss and Realization
Motivated by her persuasive assurances and the allure of quick profits, the victim transferred a total of Rs 29 lakh in three separate instalments: on December 6, 2025, January 20, 2026, and March 2, 2026. This money represented his hard-earned savings, earmarked for his sister's wedding scheduled for the following month.
After the final transaction, Rachel abruptly cut off all contact, ceasing to respond to messages and calls. When the youth attempted to access the investment website, he discovered it was a sham, leading to the devastating realization that he had been cheated. On April 12, he lodged an official complaint at the Patna cyber police station, initiating a formal investigation.
Police Response and Public Warning
Cyber DSP Nitish Chandra Dhariya confirmed that a case has been registered and is currently under investigation. "The victim came into contact with the fraudster through a dating app approximately four months ago, sharing his contact number and becoming emotionally attached. Under her persuasion, he invested Rs 29 lakh in instalments, only realizing the deception after she stopped communication and disabled her contact number," Dhariya stated in a Tuesday interview.
The DSP issued a stern warning to the public, urging caution when encountering investment opportunities promoted on social media or dating platforms. "Always verify the authenticity of any investment offer. Legitimate companies typically operate through a single registered account, whereas fraudsters often use multiple accounts to deceive individuals," he advised. He emphasized the importance of conducting thorough research before investing and avoiding emotional manipulation or unrealistic promises of high returns.
This case highlights the growing threat of online scams that blend emotional exploitation with financial fraud, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance in digital interactions.
