Rourkela Cyber Police Crack Down on Mule Account Network, Arrest Three Youths

In a significant breakthrough against cyber fraud, the Cyber police in Rourkela have arrested three young individuals on Thursday for their alleged role in operating mule bank accounts. These accounts facilitated illicit transactions totaling over Rs 8 crore, highlighting a growing threat in digital financial crimes.

Details of the Arrests and Investigation

The arrested youths have been identified as Ronak Das, Rosan Ray, and Sahahnawaz Khan, all in their 20s. The arrests were announced at a press conference held in Rourkela, where DIG (western range) Brijesh Rai and SP (Rourkela) Nitesh Wadhwani provided insights into the ongoing crackdown.

According to the Rourkela police release, this action is part of the statewide special cyber crime enforcement initiative dubbed 'Operation Cyber Kavach'. Under this operation, police have intensified coordinated efforts across the district to identify, disrupt, and dismantle cyber fraud networks. SP Wadhwani emphasized that the probe is ongoing to uncover other individuals involved in operating the mule accounts and the broader network.

Scope of 'Operation Cyber Kavach' and Achievements

The operation has yielded substantial results so far. Rourkela police reported that:

  • 10 cyber crime cases have been registered across various police stations.
  • 17 accused individuals have been identified and booked.
  • 86 mule accounts have been verified to date.

These figures underscore the scale of cyber fraud activities in the region and the police's commitment to combating them. Mule accounts, often used to launder money, are a critical component in many online scams, making this enforcement action crucial for public safety.

The arrests serve as a warning to those involved in similar illicit activities, as authorities continue to ramp up efforts under 'Operation Cyber Kavach' to safeguard citizens from cyber threats.
