Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized that the decision to keep or remove the Sanchar Saathi app rests entirely with the consumer. "If you don't want the Sanchar Saathi app, you can delete it. It is optional," the Minister stated. He explained that while the government sees it as its duty to introduce the security tool to the public, the ultimate choice of its presence on a personal device belongs to the user.
This user-friendly stance directly addresses concerns about forced software installation. Scindia's comments assure buyers of new mobile phones that the preloaded app can be uninstalled if they do not find it useful or necessary for their needs.
Contrast with Initial DoT Directive
The Minister's clarification follows a recent order from the Department of Telecommunications that had a more stringent tone. On Monday, the DoT directed smartphone manufacturers in India to preload the Sanchar Saathi app on all handsets. The initial directive specified that the app, designed to help users report spam calls, fraudulent messages, and stolen phones, must be made non-removable.
The DoT's communication mandated that every new handset sold in the country must come with the app already installed. For devices already in the market, companies were instructed to push the app via a software update. Smartphone makers were given a compliance window of three months to adhere to these instructions.
