The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken a significant step to address the mounting traffic congestion and parking difficulties across the city. In a move aimed at alleviating the shortage of dedicated parking spaces, the civic body has allocated 102 plots to private commercial complexes for use as parking facilities. These plots are distributed across the seven administrative zones of the city.
Lease Terms and Revenue
According to officials from the AMC, the plots have been leased on a temporary basis for a period of one year. The lease agreement includes a fixed rent and a property tax collection policy. The initiative has been spearheaded by the AMC's estate department to combat the growing problem of roadside parking, especially in commercial hubs where adequate parking infrastructure is lacking.
From these allocations, the AMC has collected a total of Rs 41.53 lakh as rent, Rs 1.04 lakh as Goods and Services Tax (GST), and Rs 10.38 lakh as security deposits from the applicants. The total revenue generated from the Southwest Zone allocations alone amounts to Rs 52.96 lakh.
Zone-Wise Distribution
The highest number of plots, 33, has been allotted in the Northwest Zone. This is followed by 21 plots in the East Zone, 18 in the North Zone, 12 each in the West and Southwest zones, and six in the South Zone. This distribution reflects the varying levels of parking demand across different parts of the city.
Focus on Commercial Hubs
Officials have stated that the primary objective of this initiative is to reduce traffic bottlenecks caused by vehicles parked haphazardly on roads outside shopping centers, office complexes, and commercial establishments. Areas in western Ahmedabad, including Sarkhej and Jodhpur, have experienced persistent congestion due to the absence of sufficient parking infrastructure in commercial complexes.
Under the Southwest Zone alone, the AMC has allocated open plots to 12 commercial units strictly for parking purposes. Several Town Planning (TP) plots in Makarba, Vejalpur, Bodakdev, and Sarkhej have been earmarked for parking facilities. Additionally, plots located behind the YMCA Club, along Anandnagar Road, SG Highway, Prahladnagar Road, Corporate Road, and near Karm College have also been approved for parking use.
Exclusive Use for Parking
Civic authorities have emphasized that the leased plots are intended exclusively for vehicle parking and cannot be utilized for any other commercial activity. This measure is expected to ensure that the allocated spaces are used effectively to mitigate parking issues.
The AMC's proactive approach in leasing plots for parking is seen as a practical solution to the city's traffic management challenges. By providing designated parking areas, the corporation aims to reduce illegal parking on roads, improve traffic flow, and enhance the overall urban experience for residents and visitors alike.
