BSNL Launches Free Wi-Fi Calling Nationwide from Jan 1, 2026
BSNL's Free Wi-Fi Calling Starts Jan 1, 2026

In a significant move to enhance connectivity for its subscribers, state-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the nationwide rollout of its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service. This facility, set to become available across all telecom circles from January 1, 2026, aims to provide high-quality voice calls and messaging over any Wi-Fi network at no extra cost.

What is BSNL's VoWiFi Service?

The newly introduced VoWoFi, or Wi-Fi Calling, allows BSNL customers to make and receive standard voice calls and text messages using any available Wi-Fi connection. The service operates on an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) platform, enabling seamless handover between Wi-Fi and traditional mobile networks without dropping the call. Crucially, users can place calls directly through their phone's native dialer app using their existing mobile number, eliminating the dependency on third-party applications like WhatsApp or Skype.

Key Benefits and Target Users

The primary advantage of this service is the dramatic improvement in call clarity and reliability, especially in locations with poor cellular reception. This includes indoor spaces like homes, offices, and basements, as well as remote and difficult-to-reach areas of the country. BSNL has highlighted that the feature will be particularly beneficial for users in rural and remote regions where mobile network coverage is limited, provided they have access to a stable Wi-Fi connection, such as through BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services.

Additionally, by offloading voice traffic to Wi-Fi networks, the service is expected to reduce congestion on the mobile network, potentially improving overall service quality for all users.

How to Activate and Use

Activating the VoWiFi service is a straightforward process for customers with compatible smartphones, which includes most modern devices. Users simply need to enable the 'Wi-Fi Calling' option within their device's network or connection settings. Once activated, the phone will automatically use a connected Wi-Fi network for calls when the cellular signal is weak, ensuring an uninterrupted communication experience.

This nationwide launch is a key part of BSNL's ongoing modernization program and underscores its focus on strengthening digital connectivity in underserved parts of India. By leveraging existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, BSNL is offering a practical and cost-free solution to bridge the connectivity gap for millions of its subscribers.
